In this renovation of a weekend compound with sunset views of West Neck Bay, two new “eyebrow” dormers were added on the back, bay-side of the main house to bring in natural light and air to the second floor. On the east side, the main entrance, which faces a motor court, was redesigned to enhance its presence. A long, brightly-colored mudroom, with glass doors at either end, connects the new formal entry hall and the informal back hall to the kitchen. A new laundry room was carved out. On the second floor, the bedrooms and baths were reconfigured with a hallway running from the top of the stairs to the guest bedroom. The generous back porch facing the bay was reconfigured—structural beams supporting the roof were raised to improve the view of the bay. The guest cottage was also opened to the water, with sliding glass doors onto an existing balcony. Cable railings replaced the house’s old wood railings. The pool terrace was rebuilt.
