Stephen Moser, AIA, is principal of SMA | Stephen Moser Architects, a residential practice in the New York metro area that embraces both contemporary design and historic preservation. His residences, renovations, and careful restorations of significant modern houses reflect their environments and are sensitive to vernacular influences. Projects from the coastal Northeast to the Rocky Mountains have found inspiration in the seaside saltbox, mining structures, barns, and agrarian forms. Often the underlying structure remains visible, becoming an integral part of the architecture. And there is always a commitment to craft—grounded in the joy of making.
Selected projects include a family vacation retreat in Aspen; the restoration and expansion of the Frank Llyod Wright-influenced Tafel House in Scarsdale; the restoration of the Bauhaus- styled William Landsberg House on Long Island; an artist’s home and studio on Shelter Island, and numerous New York City apartment transformations that reshape space and light. Across scales, Moser’s work reflects attention to proportion, interior finish, and the disciplined use of color and material.
Moser has been recognized by the AIA and The Plan awards program. He is a registered architect in New York, Connecticut, and Colorado, an AIA member, and a LEED Green Associate. Prior to establishing SMA, he was a senior architect working on luxury residences and retail projects at Peter Marino Architect. He also worked on urban-scale projects at Weiss/Manfredi. He has served on local planning, architectural and environmental boards, and participates in architecture/design panels and as a guest critic at architecture schools. He holds degrees from Cornell University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
On his travels, he enjoys making watercolors and filling his sketchbook with drawings of structures and landscapes.
Helene Lee is an associate at SMA. Since joining the studio in 2016, she has worked on residential projects, civic-private designs, and competitions. She brings to each project her creative vision, a refined design aesthetic, and innovative ideas about space and form. She has a Master of Architecture from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, with a minor in philosophy with distinction, from University at Buffalo. Her interest in architecture grew from her early exploration of both physical and implied spatial occupancy through her background in ballet and modern dance.
Evan Cerilli is a licensed architect and BIM consultant who has been an integral part of SMA’s extended team since 2017. A former full-time SMA employee, he continues to collaborate with the studio on an ongoing basis, contributing to its projects, including 125 American Lane in Aspen. Evan plays a key role in integrating and managing SMA's Building Information System. He brings deep expertise in sustainable materials and high-performance building technologies, as well as the digital representation and information management of architectural projects.
Evan holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Lehigh University. He has lectured at Harvard GSD on the future of wood architecture and high-rise design and has served as a guest critic at the Rhode Island School of Design.
